Exhausted and demoralised nurses would rather work as prostitutes than in Queensland's crumbling hospitals. A former registered nurse of 10 years' experience has told how she and at least four of her colleagues have found new jobs working in brothels. "We could no longer work in such an understaffed and stressful environment," said the mother of two, who wanted to be known only as Jenna."I was overworked, poorly paid and a mistake could have led to charges if I caused a death," she said. "I came to the conclusion the nursing shortage wasn't my problem but it was my responsibility to protect myself from burning out or making a fatal mistake." Queensland Nurses Union assistant secretary Beth Mohle said the union was aware nurses were leaving the system because of workloads and burnout, and were experiencing record levels of frustration. "A survey of nurses' attitudes undertaken last year found most nurses love nursing but hate their jobs," she said."There's a tension there that nurses feel they can't deliver the quality of nursing they want to." She said based on population growth projections, Queensland would need an additional 16,000 nurses in the private, public and aged-care sectors by 2014. "Queensland is already behind the rest of Australia in terms of registered nurse numbers and is over-represented in the unlicensed assistant-in-nursing category," Ms Mohle said. "Of the 16,100 nursing assistants in Australia in 2006, Queensland had a massive 7300, or nearly 50 per cent. This points to a serious skill mix problem, as well as a numerical problem, within the Queensland nursing workforce."
The QNU survey also found 45 per cent of nurses had experienced workplace violence, which is more prevalent in the public and aged-care sectors than in the private sector. Jenna said violence was more of a concern in hospitals than in the sex industry. "The security (at the brothel) is wonderful. We have buzzers in our room, there are bracelets we can request if you have a client you're a bit suspicious of." Jenna said she had gone to great lengths to hide her new occupation from her family. "I wear my nurse's uniform to work, I carry my hospital ID. But when I get to work I change. There's a couple of others who do the same," she said.
Health Minister Stephen Robertson said it was disappointing some nurses were seeking alternative careers. "Queensland nurses are now among the highest paid in Australia, having benefited from a 26 per cent wage increase since 2006," he said. "This is one of the factors which has helped us to recruit an extra 5834 nurses since June 2005." Jenna highlighted the "tiny tea-rooms" for nurses and the lack of recognition they received. "After the Bali bomb blasts, the burns unit of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital treated many additional patients. At the end, the doctor was given an award. The nurses got nothing," she said.She also revealed how doctors at the RBWH referred to nurses as "Libra fleurs" - because they believed the floral tops of their uniforms resembled tampon boxes. But Mr Robertson said the Government had created a "safe and supporting working environment for nurses". "We'll continue to work . . . to ensure we have a strong nursing workforce, equipped to give Queenslanders the first-class health care they expect and deserve," he said.

According to a civil suit filed Monday, Skol arrived at the hospital at about 4 a.m. Her usual doctor was out of town, so Dr. Scott Pierce filled in. The lawsuit alleged that Pierce showed up at Rush four hours later, and when he did, he allegedly reprimanded Skol for not calling before coming in. The lawsuit claims he said there was not enough time to administer pain medication. The suit also accuses Pierce of telling a nurse that Skol got the pain she deserved because she had not called ahead. "Sometimes pain is the best teacher," he allegedly said.Skol says the doctor gave her an excruciating vaginal exam in the middle of a contraction. Then, although she was not fully dilated, she claims Pierce instructed her to start pushing. When Skol or the staff questioned his methods, Pierce told Skol, "Shut up, close your mouth, and push," according to the suit. Skol accuses the doctor of giving her unnecessary stitches after the birth, using an excessively large needle. A spokesperson for Rush said Pierce is in private practice and is not employed by the hospital, and that the hospital in no way condones the actions described in the civil suit. Dr. Pierce declined to comment.

What good would technology be if people weren't constantly using it to send naked pictures of themselves to each other? I would know, too—since the age of 12, my inbox has been filled with inappropriate photos of people whether I wanted to see them or not (in fact, there might be some in there right now). Like most tech trends, however, the oft-inadvisable act of sending nude photos to people on the Internet is being adopted en masse by young Internet users, with fairly large numbers of teenagers posting them online or—even worse—sending them to people they don't even know.A survey of 1,280 teenagers (users age 13-19) and young adults (age 20-26) conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and CosmoGirl.com has revealed that one out of five (20 percent) teens overall have posted nude photos or video of themselves on the Internet—that number goes up to a third when young adults are included. While 71 percent of teen girls and 67 percent of teen guys who have sent these photos say they've sent them to a boyfriend or girlfriend, 15 percent overall said they've sent nude photos to people they only "knew" online. For women, that percentage stays the same when they turn into young adults, although the percentage of young adult men goes up to 23 percent.This is, of course, despite the fact that almost three quarters of all teens and young adults surveyed say that sending sexually-suggestive content "can have serious negative consequences." Clearly, this is an issue of "do as I say, not as I do." And don't for a minute think that your sexy recipient is necessarily keeping your photos private—a quarter of teen girls and a third of teen boys said that they've had nude images originally meant for someone else shared with them. Patpong depends on foreigners to keep afloat, but as the 350,000 air travellers stranded by the airport closures rush to leave Thailand, replacements are not coming in."Now Thailand has a problem -- no customers," said Lam, a man who works for Nan's bar, luring tourists in off the streets by posing as a friendly Thai offering unsolicited advice on good places to go. Lam is hopeful the trade will return to Patpong, a lurid strip of live shows and sleazy nightlife. "It is because of the airport, but now the airport is all clear," he said. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is not so optimistic.The group expects incoming travellers in 2009 to be half the 14.8 million the kingdom saw last year, with word of the protests causing tourists considering a trip to Thailand to book elsewhere. The measures announced Saturday would affect about 36 coffee shops in the center itself - a little less than 20 percent of the city total.Asscher underlined that the city center will remain true to its freewheeling reputation. "It'll be a place with 200 windows (for prostitutes) and 30 coffee shops, which you can't find anywhere else in the world - very exciting, but also with cultural attractions," he said. "And you won't have to be embarrassed to say you came."Under the plan announced Saturday, Amsterdam will spend euro30 million to euro40 million ($38 million to $51 million) to bring hotels, restaurants, art galleries and boutiques to the center. It will also build new underground parking areas.
Amsterdam already had plans to close many brothels and some coffee shops, but plans announced Saturday go further. Asscher said the city would reshape the area, using zoning rules, buying out businesses and offering assistance to upgrade stores. The city has shut brothels and sex clubs in the past by relying on a law allowing the closure of businesses with bookkeeping irregularities.
Prostitution will be allowed only in two areas in the district - notably De Wallen ("The Walls"), a web of streets and alleys around the city's medieval retaining dam walls. Authorities say the photos were taken by Maldonado's husband, David, who had also once worked at the humane society. "How do you have sexual relations with something that can’t consent? How do you do that? And it not be illegal?" said Howard. Shockingly, in Florida, Bestiality is not a crime. The Flagler county sheriff's department said what is a crime, are sex acts involving children. There were also photos of Carla Maldonado performing lewd acts on and with a 14-year-old girl in 2005 (she was apparently a runaway the couple had become acquainted with). A nude photograph of two local high school cheerleaders that prompted their suspension from their after-school activity is now at the center of a lawsuit against school officials and the Northshore School District. Bothell High School suspended the two girls from the cheer squad for the rest of the year as punishment for the nude photo. In response, the girls' parents have filed two separate lawsuits over the school's handling of the situation. One of the mothers, who we will identify only as "Kathy," said the photos were the result of a teenage prank. She said her daughter and a friend took nude photos of each other with their cell phones in one of their homes over the summer, then sent one of them to one of the girls' boyfriend."I was like, 'what were you thinking?' She (my daughter) goes, ' I wasn't; we just were fooling around. I took a picture, I erased it immediately. I wasn't thinking,'" Kathy said. But the girls soon realized they had forgotten to erase one of the photos. That lone photo, the girls claim, was sent to the entire football team without their knowledge. Kathy said the embarrassment her daughter faced was punishment enough. "Deep down, it bothers her," she said.According to court documents, school officials learned about the nude photo making its round in June of 2008 and in response issued a letter to parents of cheer squad members stating inappropriate photos will not be tolerated. Lap dancing "is not sexually stimulating", the chairman of the Lap Dancing Association told a parliamentary committee today. Simon Warr made the claim, which was greeted with scepticism by MPs, while he was giving evidence to the Commons culture committee as part of an inquiry into the operation of the Licensing Act. The government is under pressure to change the act so that lap dancing clubs have to be licensed as sex encounter establishments. At the moment, they are licensed in the same way as pubs and clubs, which has led to complaints from councils who believe that they do not have the power to stop clubs being opened in their areas. In their evidence to committee, Warr and colleagues from the Lap Dancing Association claimed that their clubs should not be classified as sex encounter establishments because they were providing hospitality, not sexual services.But Warr astonished the committed when he argued that sexual stimulation was not part of the clubs' attraction. "If you do not feel comfortable walking past a lap dancing club when you are going to the bus stop, it's not something that you are going to talk to the police about," she said. A desire to "keep up with the boys" has resulted in a rise in the number of women seeking treatment for their sex addiction. Although the taboo topic was primarily seen as a male problem, Sex Therapy New Zealand director Robyn Salisbury said women were becoming prone to a "ladette" culture. And while there were no firm figures available, she would not be surprised if the number seeking help had risen "quite dramatically" in recent years. "Women today are moving beyond traditional constraints and are claiming their own sexual pleasures and power," she said. "This is great if it doesn't detract from other areas of their lives, but often these people are never satisfied and it can become destructive." Salisbury said the phenomenon was down to women trying to "keep up with the boys" through a series of affairs, or casual sex. The trend matches developments overseas. In America, one therapist said that women made up almost a third of people seeking sex addiction treatment.Salisbury said many women initially sought help for alcoholism, drug addiction or depression but a sex addiction was often uncovered as the root of other problems once their treatment began. "Many women are unaware they may have an addiction. "Anytime anyone portrays any kind of addictive behaviour, it is usually in order to meet another need." Sex addictions were dangerous, she said, because they were a form of self-abuse, or abuse toward a partner. Women often leaned toward a sex addiction when they were craving intimacy or love, while men tended to be attracted to the notion of casual sex "because they can". Overseas research has shown sex and love are scientifically addictive. When comparing the brain scans of sex and cocaine addicts, researchers found activity in identical areas. Sex isn't the only addiction keeping therapists busy. Tanorexics must have regular applications of fake tan, or sessions on a sunbed. Others find it hard to ignore social networking websites and one woman doesn't feel "a real person" if she misses an episode of her favourite reality TV show."Addictions mess up your life," says Walter Logeman, a Christchurch-based psychotherapist who specialises in internet addictions. "A [certain kind of] behaviour is likely to be an addiction if you repeat it even though it makes your life unhealthy and eventually un-manageable." Louise Smith (not her real name) is so addicted to checking her Facebook page for updates on her friends she calls it "face-stalking". Even though they're a phone call away, Smith can't help but scroll through photos and status updates _ a one-line sentence relaying what your friends are doing _ "countless" times a day. Wellington nanny Bryony says her Facebook addiction _ up to five hours a day _ has made her "a bit antisocial" and led to her losing friends. "I didn't think it was a big deal until I decided I'd rather be checking what people are up to and sending messages than going out or doing sociable things." Logeman says becoming addicted to the internet is becoming more common because it's about forming relationships through a new medium.Helen (not her real name) will readily admit to being addicted to television _ but not any show. The Aucklander, who "absolutely has to" watch reality series on a regular basis to feel content, says her life revolves around programmes such as America's Next Top Model and Survivor. "Some days I'd rather avoid my own life and deal with the ones I watch on TV." Logeman says this type of activity which could be perceived as an addiction is a prime example of escapism. Tanorexics are obsessed with constantly having a dark tan. "My friend is a total tanorexic," says Cheryl, a former tanning consultant. "She uses a sunbed probably three times a week and when she's not doing that she uses spray-on tans. She looks orange _ it's disgusting, but I can't tell her she looks crap." An American study found tanorexics may have an addiction to the ultra-violet rays in tanning beds, which result in a high similar to a drug addiction.Peter Adams, a professor specialising in addictive behaviour at Auckland University, says an addiction to tanning is only a problem if it is impacting on relationships or employment. "I carry my litre bottle with me just about everywhere," says Sara Livingstone, a 19-year-old university student. "Most people I know do. I don't think I could go to class without it. I'd get dehydrated and feel a bit naked without it." Saying you're addicted to water is like saying you're addicted to chocolate _ you don't need it to get by, you enjoy it, says Adams. "People say `I'm addicted' about a lot of things, but I would not see it as a problem unless it is affecting someone's health or relationships. It's not like they have a loss of control over it like someone with a drug or alcohol addiction might do."

The University of Rochester study, published in a psychology journal, supports other evidence linking the colour to attractiveness.Men said they would spend more money on a woman pictured in red, compared with the same woman wearing a blue shirt. Experts say that red signals ovulation or attractiveness in other species. The colour has traditionally been linked with romantic and sexual matters, from red hearts on Valentine's Day, to red-light districts. The researchers say that their study is clear evidence that the colour red makes men feel more amorous - even if this is only on a subconscious level.Their volunteers were told they had $100, shown the picture of their "date", then asked how much of that money they were prepared to spend. On average, wearing red meant a more expensive night out, and in general, a higher rating of attractiveness. When the pictures were shown to other women, there were no wardrobe-dependent differences in attractiveness ratings.Professor Andrew Elliot, who led the research, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, said: "It's fascinating to find that something as ubiquitous as colour can be having an effect on our behaviour without our awareness."
